Supernatural Does Meta → The very first meta reference occurred in the first episode of Supernatural, Pilot. This subtle nod referenced The X-Files, a television show which ran from 1993 to 2002 and has influenced Supernatural in multiple ways. The GIFs above are just a few of the various X-Files references that have appeared in Supernatural.
Supernatural’s opening for episode 6x09, Clap Your Hands If You Believe pays tribute to The X-Files with it’s opening. Sera Gamble has said that the opening to The X-Files was the first thing the writers thought of when wanting to change up the title sequence for this particular episode.
Both shows also share actors. Actors who have appeared on both shows include: Mitch Pileggi (Samuel Campbell), Steven Williams (Rufus Turner), Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer), Mark Sheppard (Crowley), Chad Lindberg (Ash) and Frederic Lehne (Azazel).
Also important to note, many crew members from Supernatural have also worked on The X-Files. These people include: Kim Manners, David Nutter, Angela Will, and John Shiban.
